Position Summary
The Stationary Engineer 2 is responsible for leading and overseeing the operation, maintenance, and repair of powerhouse equipment within a correctional facility. This role includes providing work direction and training to lower-level staff and inmate workers, ensuring safe and efficient operation of boilers and related systems, maintaining operational logs, and adhering to strict security and safety protocols. The position operates on a flexible schedule with extended shifts in a physically demanding and regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a lead worker by providing work direction and training to lower-level powerhouse staff and inmate workers.
- Operate, monitor, maintain, and repair powerhouse equipment, including boilers, furnaces, turbines, pumps, generators, fans, and pollution control equipment.
- Conduct routine rounds of the powerhouse, reading gauges, adjusting equipment, and observing system performance.
- Start, stop, and adjust generating equipment as operational needs require.
- Maintain detailed powerhouse logs, including gauge readings, fuel usage, and power generation data.
- Complete work records, time cards, and related documentation accurately.
- Maintain inventory of parts, tools, and supplies.
- Oversee housekeeping and maintenance of the powerhouse and surrounding areas.
- Ensure compliance with safety procedures, security protocols, and operational standards.
- Maintain supervision and security of inmate workers during assigned shifts.
- Strong knowledge of powerhouse operations, safety practices, and stationary engineering principles.
- Ability to operate and maintain boilers and related mechanical equipment.
- Experience providing work direction and on-the-job training.
- Ability to interpret operating procedures and complete routine forms and logs.
- Basic mathematical skills, including calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend for extended periods and lift up to 80 pounds.
- Ability to work extended shifts, rotating schedules, weekends, and flexible hours.
- Experience working in a correctional or high-security environment.
- Experience supervising or training staff in industrial or mechanical settings.
- Familiarity with inventory tracking and maintenance recordkeeping.
- Strong interpersonal skills to establish a professional and respectful work environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid Stationary Steam Engineer License required, with ongoing annual renewal.
